BOE Approves Field Trips and Contracts

The Board of Education met in regular session on Monday, April 7, 2014 with all Board members present. Following the Pledge of Allegiance the Board moved to delegations.

Allen Mullins addressed the Board regarding a request for his son to attend Tucker County Schools in the 2014-2015 school year as a Senior.

The Board approved several agenda adjustments and then moved on to consent items where they approved the Minutes of the Budget Workshop, Statutory Meeting, and Regular Meeting of March 17, 2014.

The Board then approved budget supplements and transfers of: HI Acuity Health Funds-$1631.00 and Dale’s Pre-K Tupperware Fundraiser – $2,149.68.

The Board approved the vendors accounts and paid bills.

The Board approved the monthly finance report for February 2014 as presented.

The Board approved the following Out of State professional leave and student travel requests:

*Miss Jay’s PK Class and Parents to Carnegie Museum of Natural History on May 22, 2014.

*TVEMS Kindergarten Classes to Idlewild, Pa. on May 21, 2014.

*DTEMS 4th Grade to Kennywood Park, Pa. on June 6, 2014.

*TCHS Class of 2014 to Virginia Beach, Va. from May 30-June 3, 2014 (previously approved; resubmitted due to change in dates and cost).

The Board moved into Executive Session to discuss Attendance Exceptions. The Board returned from Executive Session with no action taken.

Attendance exceptions as recommended by the Superintendent were approved. One student was denied transfer into Tucker County Schools based upon recommendation of Dr. Campbell and Mr. Jay Hamric, TCHS Principal.

The following request from community and private parties to use Tucker County school buses for private transportation were approved:

* Josh Stevens, NYSF Education Coordinator, science camp transportation on April 26-28, 2014.

* Anna Sommer, wedding on July 5, 2014.

The following job shadow sites for TCHS students were approved:

• Garrett County Memorial Hospital, Oakland, MD.

• Performance Motors, Parsons, WV.

• Shell Wind Energy, Mt. Storm, WV.

• Hair Haven, Parsons, WV.

• McClain Publishing, Parsons, WV.

• Youth Health, Elkins, WV.

• Davis Memorial Hospital, Elkins, WV.

• Performance Auto Body, Parsons, WV.

• Jones Auto Body, Parsons, WV.

• City of Thomas, Thomas, WV.

• Frontier Phone Line, Hambleton, WV.

• Citizens National Bank, Parsons, WV.

• Country Kitchen Restaurant, Thomas, WV.

• Tucker Valley Elementary Middle School, Hambleton, WV.

• MUD Ceramics, Thomas, WV.

The Board reviewed the in-state travel for March report submitted by the Superintendent .

The Board then moved on to Committee reports.

Dr. Campbell reminded the Board that Tucker County will host the RESA 7 Advisory Council meeting on April 10 at Canaan Valley Institute. It will be catered by the ProStart students at TCHS. CVI will be providing tours of their facility. Jr Helmick will give a presentation about the CTE classes at TCHS, and a short presentation will be given on the partnership between CVI and Tucker County Schools.

Dr. Campbell informed the Board that Dr. Pharis, State Superintendent of Schools will be at Canaan Valley Resort on April 10 to hold round table discussions with the County Superintendents.

Board member M. Parsons reported that the Extension Service will have a budget hearing on April 11.

A short discussion was held on various possible locations for future levy presentations.

Having no delegations pertaining to non-agenda items the Board moved on to personnel/legal matters.

The Board approved the employment of Tracy L Chenoweth, as Principal, full-time, 240 day employment term, TVEMS, 2014-2015 school term.

The Board approved the following transfer and place:

Angie Nestor, Kindergarten teacher, full-time, 200 day employment term, DTEMS, 2014-2015 school term.

Valerie Eye, Fifth grade teacher, full-time, 200 day employment term, DTEMS, 2014-2015 school term.

The Board approved the creation of Fifth Grade Teacher, full time, 200 day employment term at Davis Thomas Elementary Middle School.

The Board approved the following probationary contracts:

Lauren Smith- Guidance Counselor, TCHS

Jill Evick-Special Education Teacher, TCHS

Teresa Betler-Language Arts, TVEMS

Andrew Howard- PE/Health, DTEMS

Dale Lansberry-PreK, TVEMS

Brian Covell- ProStart, TCHS

Neal McDermott- Building Construction, TCHS

Alisha Winans- Speech/Language Pathologist Assistant, Itinerant

Jessica Samples- Speech/Language Pathologist Assistant, Itinerant

Sheryl Kines- Spanish, TCHS

Douglas B. Stout- Music/Choral/Band, DTEMS/TCHS

Brittany Taylor- PE/Health, TVEMS

Valerie Eye-Grade 4 Teacher, DTEMS

Joshua Evans-Math 5th-8th Grade (Half-time), DTEMS

The Board went on to approve a request for leave from Robert Porter, Bus Operator, transportation department, unpaid leave.

The Board approved the following probationary contracts:

Robert Leard- Custodian, BOE Office

Jon Cooper- Custodian, TVEMS

Debra Fike- Secretary, BOE

Tracy Teets- Payroll Supervisor, BOE

Mark Burns- Bus Operator

Steve Minear- Bus Operator

The Board approved Janelle Paul- Attendance Director/Test Coordinator/RLIS

The Board approved the following Extra-curricular Recommendations:

Tom Gutshall- Head Boys’ Basketball Coach, TCHS effective April 7, 2014.

Jim Ambrose- Head Football Coach, TVEMS, effective April 8, 2014.

Darren Burnside- Assistant Football Coach, TVEMS, effective April 8, 2014.

The Board moved into Executive Session to discuss employee discipline item. The Board adjourned this executive session with no action taken.

With no further business the Tucker County Board of Education adjourned.

Next meeting will be Tuesday, April 15, 2014 at 4:30 p.m. at the Board office when the Special Statutory meeting will be reconvened to be followed by the regular meeting at 4:45 p.m.
