The Tygarts Valley Conservation District (TVCD) sponsored the first Horticulture Field Day on Friday Sept. 20.  The field day was held at the Sickler Farm in the Chestnut Ridge area of Barbour County.

During the morning session FFA students were invited from the five counties that are represented by the TVCD.  Barbour and Tucker Counties sent students to participate in the field day.  Students were divided into four groups and rotated through the four presentations.  The students had an opportunity to learn about Irrigation Systems, Pollinators, High Tunnel Production and Flower Production.  After the presentations, lunch was served at the Chestnut Ridge Community Building.  The students enjoyed lunch and listened to a presentation on Agritourism.  This was a very informative and fun day for everyone.  After lunch students were given packets of information and then departed back to school.

The afternoon session started after lunch with the Tygarts Valley Growers Association and the general public attending.  Presentations were given on Farm to School Program, Irrigation Systems, Plant Health/Seasonal Crops, Pollinators and Marketing. The growers observed plants such as carrots, beans, tomatoes, peppers and beets growing in the high tunnels.  This was an opportunity to share ideas and learn new ideas.
The Tygarts Valley Conservation District would like to thank Jeff and Lisa Sickler of Sickler Farms for allowing us to hold this field day at their farm.  We would like to thank all of our presenters for the knowledge that they have shared.  TVCD is committed to providing continuing education for our citizens.
