The house in this picture may not be familiar to many folks in Tucker County. However, the chimney in the house is very familiar to many. The chimney, which is all that is left of the Wolford homeplace, is located at the intersection of State Route 32 and 72. The house was the home of Columbus and Mary Flanagan Wolford. Columbus died in 1879 at the age of 39. This left his wife “Aunt Pop” with ten children to raise by herself. Children were: Florence, Frances, Christina, Edith, Malan, Columbia, Amelia, Mary, Alice and Claudius. Malan was 17 and Claud 11 when their father passed away. It is quite amazing that the chimney was so well engineered that it has survived since the mid 1800’s. Ideas or comments contact Tim Turner (304) 478-3389.
