DAVIS – Nearly 30 teams spent Saturday morning slip sliding their way down the Sled Run at Blackwater Falls State Park in home-made sleds made from just two household items – duct tape and cardboard. This was the fourth year for this family fun activity, which had a theme this year of mythical creatures.
Sleds resembled dragons, flying saucers, unicorns, the abominable snowman and even a flying pink pig with a parachute. Blackwater Falls State Park Superintendent Matt Baker said the cardboard and duct tape race is a great event that is always well attended.
“The event grows every year and this year we added live music, some food and some outdoor cooking,” Baker said. “We hope the race continues to grow. This is a fun family event and as you can see, the parents have as much fun as the kids.”
Three awards were given for the race – the Tip Top Award for the most visually appealing sled; the Spirit Award for the team having the most fun; and the Speed Award for the best overall team time on their downhill descent.
Each of the prize winners received a gift certificate entitling them to a two-night stay at the Blackwater Falls State Park Campground or a two-night stay in one of the 4-bedroom cabins.
The Blackwater Falls State Park Sled Run opened in January 2015 and was the longest sled run on the East Coast, measuring more than a quarter mile.
The next big upcoming race at Blackwater Falls State Park is during the Memorial Day Weekend and will be a duct tape and cardboard boat race at Pendleton Lake.
