Gladys Rebecca Yokum Heitz, 94, passed away peacefully at Cortland Acres on Sunday, April 17, 2016. She was born at Bonner Mountain in Randolph County on February 28, 1922 to the late Dennis Yokum and Lucy Greenwalt Yokum. Mrs. Heitz was also preceded in death by her husband of 62 years, Herman E. Heitz, and two sons, David E. Heitz and Herman J. Heitz. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family, being predeceased by two brothers, Kelly Yokum and Troy Yokum, and two sisters, Hilda Stanhaggen and Ruby Silber.
She is survived by 3 grandchildren, Leslie Honish, of Acworth, GA, Allen Heitz of Los Angeles, CA, and Kenneth Heitz of Watertown, MA, four great grandchildren, one great-great grandchild, and numerous nieces and nephews.
Gladys lived most of her life in WV with time spent in Washington, DC, Kansas, and Arizona, due to her husband’s employment. She was an avid gardener, a great cook, and always had the most beautiful flowers in her neighborhood. She was a woman of faith and cherished her well-worn Bible, which will be buried with her at her request.
Friends were received, Friday, April 22, from 11 a.m. – 2 p.m., the funeral hour, at Buena Chapel United Methodist Church in Canaan Valley with Rev. Bob Johnson and Rev. Neil Parsons officiating. Interment followed in the Buena Cemetery. Hinkle Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements. www.hinklefuneralhome.com
