Denzil “Denny” Earl Evans Jr., 50, a resident of Parsons, passed from this life Monday, April 18, 2016. He had been in his usual health and death was unexpected.
Denny was born Wednesday, June 23, 1965 in Washington, D.C., a son of the late Denzil Earl Evans, Sr. and Wanda Lucille Hymes Evans Crossland who survives in Thomas. On April 2, 1988 in Parsons, he was united in marriage to the former Marcia Lea Hunt. They had celebrated twenty-eight years of marriage.
Others left to cherish Denny’s memory is his son, Thomas Earl Evans of Parsons, his step -father, Richard Crossland of Thomas, two brothers, Kevin Matthew Evans of Mt. Grove and Ryan Garth Evans of Thomas, a step -brother, Kelly Wayne Crossland and wife, Shaena of Thomas and Dawn Marie Gravelle of Davis, and several aunts, uncles, nieces, and nephews.
Preceding Denny in death were his paternal grandparents, Glennis “Bus” Evans and Mabel Irene Knotts Evans, his maternal grandparents, William Herbert Hymes, Jr. and Velma Lucille Sines Hymes, and his step -brother, Richard Crossland, Jr.
Denzil was well known and loved throughout the entire county. He was a cherished adopted brother, parent, uncle and friend to so many. He attended Davis-Thomas Elementary/Middle School and graduated from Tucker County High School with the class of 1983. He went on to play baseball as a pitcher at Garrett Community College. He adored all things sports and could be seen in the stands at any local sporting event, but his real love was for the ball diamond. During recent years as a baseball coach, he was able to touch the lives of many young men. An avid golfer, Denny was a longstanding member of the Holly Meadows Country Club. He was also an outdoor enthusiast, often seen with life-long friends in the woods or on a stream. He was a member of Mt. Top Hunting Club and Darkey Hollow Hunting Club. He had worked for Buffalo Coal for nineteen years before going to work with Bolyard Construction. He was a member and trustee of the First United Methodist Church of Parsons.
Visitation was held at the Summerfield Funeral Home on Thursday from 3 to 5 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. On Friday, April 22, 2016, Denny was moved to the First United Methodist Church, where friends called from 1 until 2 p.m., the funeral hour. Reverend William R. Brown and Reverend S. Jeff Anderson officiated and interment followed in the Bethel Cemetery in Holly Meadows. For some time, Denny had a desire to see the lights at the baseball field upgraded. The family has requested that memorial contributions for this project be sent to Tucker County High School, 116 Mt. Lion Way, Hambleton, WV 26269 and mention baseball team in the memo.
