PARSONS – More than 20 Tucker County 4-H members gathered on Sunday at Camp Kidd in Parsons for an afternoon of family fun and friendly competition. Tucker County Extension Agent Jesica Streets said the group gathered to celebrate a long standing tradition of sharing 4-H Field Day.
“The afternoon featured lots of friendly competition amongst the group where clubs competed against other clubs,” Streets said. “One of the favorite games is minute to win it.”
During the event, team members also played ‘bring it’ where runners were asked to gather items and people. Following the games, 4-H members gathered with their families for a picnic of hamburgers and hotdogs. Each family brought along a covered dish to share.
Streets said 4-H Field Day is held on the first Sunday of May and has been held for many years. She said some of the clubs joined together to form a team large enough to compete during the Sunday games.
“Currently we have eight 4-H Clubs in Tucker County,” Streets said. “We offer programs in the schools as well as traditional clubs, and we are always looking for more new members.”
Activities during the year for 4-H include Field Day, project workshops and Officers Training School. Streets said lots of kids attend Tucker County 4-H Camp, which are lots of fun.
“We also have a large turnout in November for our Officers Training School,” Streets said. “Every office in the clubs is different with lots of responsibilities, and kids enjoy learning what those responsibilities are and ideas to take back to their clubs. Following the training, we have an initiation ceremony.”
To join a club, or questions about 4-H opportunities in Tucker County, contact the Tucker County 4-H Extension Office at 304-478-2949, ext. 209.
