PARSONS – Tucker County Clerk Sherry Simmons said many voters believe the election results they see on television on election night are the final results – but she said that is not true.
“The outcome of the election is not official until the completion of the canvass of votes and certification of results. This was completed in Tucker County May 16,” Simmons said. “The purpose of the canvass is to account for every ballot cast and to ensure each valid vote is included in the official results.”
The West Virginia primary election was May 10.
“The canvass means aggregating or confirming every valid ballot cast is counted including absentee, early votes, those from the Election Day, provisional, challenged and uniformed and overseas citizen. The canvass enables the County Clerk to ensure completeness and accuracy before certifying the election,” Simmons said.
The canvass was conducted by the Tucker County Commissioners, Simmons, Chief Deputy Clerk Shelly Bolyard, and Gary and Jane Greenhalgh. The official ballot tallies were entered by Wendy Nedrow and Barbie Evans, Deputy County Clerks.
To determine which precinct to be hand counted is an official draw of the precinct numbers and the ballots in precinct 3 – St. John’s Church – were hand counted. Following the completion of the canvass of votes, the official results were certified and sent to the West Virginia Secretary of State. They may be viewed at www.wvsos.gov.
