Elkins, WV – It’s the time of year when hundreds of residents from multiple counties join Davis Medical Center’s ultimate summer health program, 100 Miles in 100 Days. Registration is open through May 29.
“Last year we had 443 participants who logged more than 80,000 miles. We’re hoping to exceed both of those numbers in 2016,” said Rachel Phillips, program coordinator.
100 Miles in 100 Days is a self-directed walking program designed to get people in the habit of being active every day. Participants commit to walk at least one mile (approximately 20 minutes) each day from May 29 to September 5, 2016.
Registration packets can be downloaded at www.dhs100miles.com or picked up at the Davis Medical Center Gorman Avenue Information Desk, Broaddus Hospital or at the Tucker County Health Department.
Walkers are required to keep track of their miles on a log which is turned in on September 9. Those who successfully complete the program receive a 100 Miles in 100 Days t-shirt.
Although focused on walking, other forms of activity including running, biking and aerobic exercise can be counted. The exercise must meet 20 minutes of cardio activity to qualify as one mile.
Participants may walk as individuals or form a group. “We encourage folks to enjoy the program by joining with friends and pets too in their daily walk,” said Phillips.
The program’s popularity may stem from the simple nature of the required physical activity. Walking is an easy way to get on the path to a healthier lifestyle. Here’s why:
There is no cost to get started.
It is easy and safe.
People of all ages and stages of life can do it.
It has one of the lowest exercise dropout rates.
It requires no formal training or expensive equipment.
According to Jim Severino, RD, LD, CDE, Registered Dietitian and Certified Diabetes Educator for Davis Medical Center, walking is one of the most effective forms of exercise to achieve heart health.
“Even those who have not exercised regularly can benefit from a walking regimen,” Severino said. “Take a short walk before breakfast or after dinner. Start with 5-10 minutes and work up to 30 minutes.”
