Tucker County Schools Board Meeting was held Monday, June 20 at 4:300p.m. in the Tucker County Board Office. All board members were present except for Tim Turner.
There was one special presentation by Jane Parsons stating “Dr. Campbell, on behalf of the Parsons High School Alumni Association, we would like to present you a picture of the high school where the scholarships originated from those students.” The picture was of the old high school which today is the board office.
Under Personnel, there were three resignations/retirements. Under Professional Personnel was Jr Helmick, Assistant Principal at TCHS. According to the board, it was with a heavy heart to accept and approve his resignation effective July 10 of this year. Under Service Personnel was Jeannette Lambert, substitute bus operator. According to the board, it was sad to approve this resignation as well, for Lambert has been with Tucker County for many years. Under Extra-Curricular Personnel was Jake Phillips, Head Softball Coach at TCHS. His resignation was also approved.
Also under Personnel, there were multiple approvals of Professional and Extra-Curricular. Jamie Chenoweth was approved as a half-time Math Teacher at TCHS for the 2016-2017 school year. Donna Akins was approved as a half-time Social Studies Teacher at TCHS for the 2016-2017 school year. Christine Ward the Special Education Teacher, was approved to have an extended school year from July 5 through July 29 county wide. Under New Business, purchase orders over $3000 was approved. The School Health Center Agreement with the Tucker Valley Elementary Middle School Dental Clinic was approved of agreement between St. George Medical Clinic and Tucker County Board of Education upon the understanding of any language barriers and changes. Tucker County BOE Policies, mentioning of New Policies 0000-0175.2 was approved. The adoption of text books mentioned were approved. A discussion about the Community Eligibility Provision (CEP) brought this to being not approved.
According to the board, there has been an accumulated loss over the years, with an approximate current loss at $30000. Even with CEP being available, many students still don’t eat their lunch according to the board. There would be an option of doing only one of the schools with CEP, both school or neither. The discussion continued with CEP being too big of a risk. That there are other opportunities to be provided to students in need of food within the schools. If the numbers weren’t low, CEP would be considered according to the board. When it came down to it, it was either an opportunity for the students verses the risk of losing money. In the end, all board members were against participating in the CEP.
There were Board Member Committee Updates under Other/Information on the agenda.
Kevin White stated there was a date for the salesman and installers to come which is the twenty-seventh and twenty-eighth of June and the scoreboard will be installed at that time.
Janet Preston and Eddie Campbell both attended the RESA meeting last Thursday and Campbell was again elected as Chairman for RESA 7. Preston commented that there were some updates and Campbell continued by explaining that the update was the flip charts in the buildings will be updated to meet all the homeland security guidelines.
To conclude the meeting, the board recognized Marvin Parsons. This was Parsons’ last TCBOE meeting, for he has now retired from the position. Each board member recognized Parsons and thanked him for his service as a board member. Parsons was presented a Mountain Lion Wreath.
