PARSONS – Daniel ‘Chopper’ Evans was elected to the Tucker County Board of Education, and received his oath of office from Tucker County Clerk Sherry Simmons June 22. He first served as a member of the Tucker County Board of Education during the July 5 meeting – but Evans is no stranger to the education system in the county.
Evans said he wanted to serve on the Tucker County BOE because he has been involved with the youth in Tucker County for many years.
“I was a little league football coach and now I am the assistant middle school football coach,” he said. “I am a Young Life leader in Tucker County and I am a youth pastor. I have hosted the fifth quarter for kids after every football game for more than 10 years, which draws up to 200 kids.”
Evans said he just has a love for the kids of Tucker County.
“My job right now is to learn how the system works,” Evans said. “I have no plans to change anything – I will just help those who already serve on the board and do whatever I can to help the schools.”
He said he graduated from Tucker County High School in 1988.
“Everybody knows everybody,” Evans said. “There is a personal feeling – you know the teachers, the teachers know you. Kids are not just a number in Tucker County Schools. Teachers know the kids and their names and they help the students succeed. There is a family feeling in Tucker County Schools.”
“My goal is to help the kids and the kids’ interest is my number one priority – they are what come first,” Evans said.
“I was born and raised in Tucker County and I love it here,” he said. “There no other place I would rather be. I am anxious to see our students succeed.”
Evans and his wife, Barbie, have three children, and they live in Parsons.
“My oldest son teaches math at Tucker County High School and my daughter is in her last year at Davis & Elkins College where she is an education major,” Evans said. “Our youngest child will be a junior at Tucker County High School.”
