Over the past week you may have seen ads or posters regarding Larry DeLawder’s visit to Parsons on July 31st . Yet the question remains, who is Larry DeLawder, and why is he coming to Tucker County?
According to his biography, DeLawder is a musician, a singer, a professional harmonica player, comedian, puppeteer, evangelist, husband and father. He began singing with his family at age five and continued to perform with them for many years. DeLawder has performed across the United States, Canada and El Salvador. He has traveled with well-known artists including the Dixie Melody Boys and Gary McSpadden. DeLawder performed on the popular television shows “Gary McSpadden’s Gospel Jubilee,” playing harmonica and sharing his impersonation of Barney Fife, and “Swan’s Place,” which was hosted by Dennis Swansburg. He has been involved in Gaither videos, and performed as a drummer and comedian in Branson, Missouri, including performances in the “Barbara Fairchild Show,” and performed recently at the Rockbox Theater in Fredericksburg, Texas. He has received many awards for his performances.
However, many, who know DeLawder personally, say there is more to this man than his impressive biography as a performer. He and his wife Sara have begun their own ministry traveling solo with their daughters, Hannah and Faith. The family’s message states, “it is their desire to use their God-given talents to touch hearts, win souls and minister in whatever way God will use them.” Pastor Jim Burl of Oats Drive Baptist Church, in Mesquite, Texas, stated, “It is a special gift to find someone who can minister, entertain, yet bring the message of the saving power of the Gospel of Christ. Larry and his family have a compassion for people and a desire to fulfill the missional lifestyle the Bible calls Christians to.” McSpadden shared, “In my opinion, Larry is one of the world’s finest harmonica players…a true musical artist. But there is more to Larry than his harmonica, more than his singing, and more than his Barney Fife impersonation, you will hear his heart when he speaks…he has something important to say.”
DeLawder is coming to Tucker County to entertain and to share the message of the gospel. Pastor Bill Brown said he welcomes everyone to attend this special worship service at 7 p.m., Sunday, July 31st, at the First United Methodist Church of Parsons. A love offering will be accepted.
