Canaan Valley National Wildlife Refuge Upcoming events

Sunday, August 7, 1 pm – 4 pm. Voyages in the Valley: The Rest is History. Led by the Tucker County Highlands History and Education Project. Meet at the Refuge visitor center.
Friday, August 12, 10 am. Storytime: Subject: To Be Announced. Meet at the Refuge visitor center.
Saturday, August 13, 7 am. Deep Summer Bird Walk. Meet at the Refuge visitor center for a walk with local ornithophile Casey Rucker. Binoculars will be available.
Saturday, August 13, 10 am. What’s Blooming? Meet at the Refuge Visitor Center.
Saturday, September 3, 10 am – 12 pm. Voyages in the Valley: Take it Tre-Easy. Meet at the Refuge visitor center.

Chicken Burn

Parsons Volunteer Fire Department will have their Annual Chicken Burn on Saturday August 13 from 11a.m.-??? 1/2 Chicken, Potato Salad, Green Beans, Texas Toast, Cookie & Drink $10.00 each. All proceeds benefit the Parsons Volunteer Fire Department and Ladies Auxiliary.

Historical Society meeting

The Tucker County Historical Society will meet Sunday August 14 at 2 p.m. at the Tucker County Historical Society Museum in the Tucker County Annex at 501 Chestnut St. Visitors welcome.

Board of Directors Meeting

The regular meeting of the Appalachian Community Health Center’s Board of Directors will be held on Tuesday, Aug. 16 at 6 p.m. at the Central Office Conference Room in Elkins.

Miles for Miranda walk/run

There will be a 5k run and 2 mile walk at 9 a.m. on Aug. 6 at Mill Race Park. Music will be provided, registration fee is $10. Preregister and get a free T-shirt (t-shirts are not guaranteed to entrants who register same day). Registration form on www.tristateracer.com/event.php?RaceID=8713. Benefit Miles for Miranda.

Miracles from Heaven

Miracles from heaven, rated PG, will be shown in the public in the library’s meeting room on Monday, August 8 from 5:30-7:15 p.m. , Snacks and drinks provided.

TCHS Class of 2018 Chicken Burn

TCHS Class of 2018 Chicken Burn will be Saturday Aug. 6 – 11 a.m. until 2 p.m. or until all dinners are sold out. In the Courthouse parking lot (Across from City Hall). ½ Chicken, Scalloped Potatoes, Green Beans, Roll, Dessert and Water. $10 per meal; all proceeds will benefit the TCHS Class of 2018.

2:00 p.m. Bear-ly There- Meet assistant naturalist in Harold Walters Nature Center for the reading of this book followed by some bear aware facts. About 30 minutes. YPP
3:30 p.m. Black Bears and You– Learn about West Virginia’s state animal and bear safety in Harold Walters Nature Center. YPP
7:30 p.m. Appalachian Dance with Lou & the Appalachian Country Cloggers
Circle up! It’s an evening of square dancing with caller Lou Maiuri and the Appalachian Country cloggers at Blackwater Falls State Park. Don’t let early mountain traditional dance disappear. Blackwater Falls Lodge. No experience necessary—willing to have fun is the only requirement. Event open to the public at no charge. All ages welcome.

Woodcarving Workshop with Nate Parr – Pre-registration required by calling 304-259-5511. Nate carved the wooden bears located in Blackwater Falls State Park with a chainsaw and may be persuaded to do a demonstration after the workshop on Sunday.
