PARSONS – Each year, the Tucker County Board of Education appoints students to bring a youth perspective to the meetings and to be available so BOE members can learn what students in the county need and want. This year senior Karsyn White from Tucker County High School will serve as a Student Representative to the Tucker BOE.
“I hope to represent the school and fellow students well,” Karsyn said.
Karsyn is the Student Council Vice president, manager of the Tucker County High School Football Team, Student Body President and member of the National Honor Society. She said it is important to be a Student Representative because she thinks the position lends insight to the BOE. She is very involved in YoungLife and I do Dance by Farrah.
“I am very involved with the Parsons Volunteer Fire Department and help with the Lady’s Auxiliary,” Karsyn said.
“This provides an insight into the students’ minds,” Karsyn said. “This keeps the board in touch not just with a younger adult but with a kid that is in the school system. I can share how things are going with teachers, classes and scheduling.”
Karsyn said the BOE appointing Student Representatives is a very good idea.
“I think it is good for students to see the inner workings of the board,” she said. “It has given me a chance to work for something that is bigger than a class. This gives me both job experience and life experience and helps me to see what the world is like. This will give other students the same experiences.”
She said she is pleased with the process of working with the BOE. She presented BOE members with a request to possibly change the date of graduation to allow TCHS seniors a longer time on their senior trip. The request was placed on the BOE agenda, and based on the request the date of graduation was moved from a Thursday to a Friday.
“We came up with a date that would work and got signatures of the majority of students,” she said. “We received help from Principal Jay Hamric.”
Karsyn hopes to attend West Virginia University and major in law and minor in journalism. She is the daughter of Kevin and Debbie White of Parsons.
