PARSONS – The process to work up a strategic plan for the town of Parsons began in February 2015 when members of the City Council met with the Parsons Revitalization Organization to discuss various planning options.
Michael Dougherty, WVU Extension Service specialist presented all of the information gathered about the area, and explained the group’s focused efforts, a priority of activities and points to re-energize the downtown Parsons area.
The priority activities were focused in three areas – infrastructure, economic development and connecting with the area. Specific goals include above ground structures, utilities through in ground systems, revitalizing the downtown area, creating new businesses, natural and build environment and activities available to residents.
The four focused efforts include rehabbing the Pulp Mill Bottom Dike, re-energizing the downtown area, enhancing and expanding the business community and long-term investment in community facilities.
Dougherty said residents need to focus on the good that comes from the rivers surrounding Parsons for their fishing, boating, kayaking to attract tourists.
“The location of Parsons and the amenities found in and around the town make it a natural location for nature-based recreation. Thus, firms that cater to those involved in recreational activities – selling equipment, renting great, providing instruction – would serve both residents and visitors,” Dougherty reported.
“There is also the need for more eating options for residents and visitors alike. The key will be keeping such places small enough to survive when there are a few visitors to the community,” Dougherty said.
Dougherty said future steps include reviewing comments, incorporating important and interesting ideas into the plan and providing a final version in early 2017.
