Raising the Flag for Awareness.  A special event on April 20 on the Campus of Davis Medical Center in Elkins will raise a flag, and awareness, about the importance of organ donation.  One person has the potential to save eight lives through organ donation.

Elkins, WV – Each day, 22 people die for lack of an available organ.  Davis Medical Center (DMC) is partnering with Donate Life West Virginia to help save lives by educating local communities about the importance of organ, eye and tissue donation and increasing the number of registered donors.

“April is National Donate Life Month,” said Michelle Stanton, BSN, RN, who is the Chief Quality Officer and Risk Manager for Davis Health System. “The most precious gift someone can give is the Gift of Life and the need for donors is real and occurring in our very own community.  We want to help people make educated decisions to provide a second chance for thousands of others this year.”

DMC is kicking off the month with a community flag raising event on Thursday, April 20 at 11 A.M.   Members of the community who are organ donors or organ recipients are invited to attend along with other medical and emergency medical personnel.  The event will be held at the DMC flagpole on Gorman Avenue.

Also on the 21st, Davis Medical Center staff will participate in National Blue and Green Day by wearing these colors to promote the success of organ, eye, and tissue transplantation.

“Medical advances have made transplant surgery extremely successful,” said Stanton.  “The challenge is there are more people waiting for an organ match than there are registered donors.”

To find out more about becoming a registered donor visit www.donatelifewv.org or call Kimberlee Carroll at Davis Medical Center at 304.637.3325.
