Tucker BOE members use cell phones to light agendas and documents after storms passing through the area Monday evening knocked out power at Tucker County High School. A portion of TCHS auditorium roof was damaged during the inclement weather.

HAMBLETON – The Tucker County Board of Education meeting was held at Tucker County High School Monday, and as the wind gusts grew and the rain poured, BOE members conducted most the meeting in the dark. Members discussed and asked questions about the proposed Tucker County High School weighted grades and Tucker County High School dual credit proposals.

BOE members will have their first presentation of the proposals for weighted grades and dual credits at their next meeting, and hope to have the programs in place for students for the 2017-2018 school year, allowing students to take these courses and compete with students from other schools for grants and scholarships.

Tim Turner, BOE president, said the percentage of completed FAFSA forms from Tucker County High School has exceeded 65 percent. Turner said the goal through the state was to have more than 61 percent of students completing the FAFSA forms.

Tucker County Superintendent of Schools Dr. Eddie Campbell presented BOE members with the proposed school calendar for the 2017-2018 school year. BOE members approved the calendar unanimously. Campbell said the calendar was similar to the current calendar with time off for a spring break, Christmas break and Thanksgiving week break. He said the first semester would be completed prior to the Christmas break and  students would begin school in mid-August and be completed the last week of May.

Also during Monday’s meeting, BOE members approved the following for employment in Tucker County Schools:

Amy Moore. TVEMS for classroom teacher beginning with the 2017-2018 school year.

Chelsi Primavero, DTEMS social studies/art instructor beginning with the 2017-2018 school year.

BOE members approved the following retirements and resignations:

  • Isaac Kahler, CTE math teacher at TCHS effective the end of the 2016-2017 school year.
  • Kelly Underwood, assistant cheer coach at TCHS, effective immediately.

BOE members approved the following transfers:

  • Tracy Harlan, Title I, TVEMS to grade 2 at TVEMS.
  • Rob Masten, band and music at TVEMS to middle school/high school music county-wide.

The next Tucker County BOE meeting is slated for 4:30 p.m. May 15 at Tucker County Middle School.
