July 4th Weekend Activities Abound in Canaan Valley

DAVIS, W.Va.  – Independence Day Weekend offers a plethora of activities in Canaan Valley. From outdoor music concerts to heritage festivals there is something for everyone!


Kick-off the weekend at Mountaineer Days on June 30-July 2 in Thomas, W.Va. This event has delighted attendees for more than 40 years. Events include a cake walk, patriotic bicycle decorating contest, firemen’s water battle, parade, crafts and a variety of music and dancing. You’ll also love all that Thomas has to offer by way of history, shops, and restaurants. The weekend wouldn’t be complete without fireworks! Bring a lawn chair and your camera and join us in downtown Thomas on July 1 for the fireworks show beginning after 8:30 p.m.

Celebrate the wind over the 4th of July weekend in the mountains of Canaan Valley during Windfest on July 1 & 2. Enjoy jumbo kite demonstrations, workshops, and more during the two-day weekend. The Tucker County Alpine Festival presents Celebration of the Arts the same weekend, with a free afternoon concert featuring The Wheeling Symphony Orchestra at Canaan Valley Resort Ski Area. Bring your lawn chairs and blankets. Concert begins at 3 p.m. on July 3. Food and beverages will be offered.

If you want to extend your holiday weekend into the week, check-out these additional events scheduled for the weekend after July 4.

On July 8, join the Canaan Valley Resort park naturalist for a Mid-Summer Walk Between Parks. The eight mile guided hike goes between Canaan Valley Resort and Blackwater Falls State Park. Registration fee required. Lunch is not provided. Shuttle service is included.

In the evening of July 8, enjoy Shakespeare in the Park – Outdoor Dinner Theatre at Blackwater Falls State Park. The Merry Wives of Windsor will come to life as performed by Vintage Theatre. Call 304-259-5216 for details and take advantage of a Shakespeare weekend overnight package.
