PARSONS – The Mt. Lions hosted Northern Garrett, MD last Friday September 9th. Tucker County was not able to adjust defensively as the visiting Huskies rushed for 394 yards on the ground and cruised to victory over Tucker County 39-6.
Northern received the opening kick and went right to work. The Huskies put together a 9 play 75 yard drive that was capped off on an 8 yard touchdown pass to put the visitors up 6-0. The PAT 2 point try failed to keep the score at 6-0 Northern with 7:50 left in the first quarter. Tucker County’s Ben Callaway returned the kickoff 22 yards to start the Mt. Lions drive at their own 47 yard line. However, Tucker County could not take advantage of the good field position as the drive stalled to force the Mt. Lions to punt. Northern then put their offense to work again as they got a 29 yard touchdown pass on the 9th play of the drive. The extra point kick was good to push the Huskies lead to 13-0 with 1:51 left in the first quarter.
The second quarter was the quarter of the defense for both teams. Tucker County’s Luke Poling threw 2 interceptions and the Mt. Lion offense drove the ball to the Northern 18. A failed 4th down and 3 play would turn the ball over on downs. Northern also struggle in the second quarter as they had to punt the ball two times, but their last drive of the quarter paid off. The visiting Huskies drove the ball 80 yards on 10 plays. Northern got into the end zone with 24 seconds left in the first half on a 13 yard touchdown run. The PAT kick failed to make the halftime score 19-0 Northern Garrett at the half.
Tucker County started the third quarter with a 3 and out and a punt. Then the Huskies would only need 2 plays to add to their lead. This time Northern scored on a 14 yard touchdown run and the PAT kick was good to push the score to 26-0 Northern with 9:33 left in the third quarter. On the Mt. Lions next possession a facemask penalty by Northern would move the ball into Huskies territory, but an 11 yard sack by visitors would lead to another punt by Tucker County. The Mt. Lions then held the Huskies on their next drive, but again Tucker County could not get the offense moving as they punted once again. Northern then put together a drive that was continued on a successful fake punt at the Mt. Lions 20. Then on the very next play Northern scored on a 20 yard run with 9 seconds left in the third. The PAT kick was no good to put Northern ahead 32-0.
