Five Rivers Public Library Introduces 1000 Books Before Kindergarten Challenge

Parsons  –  The Five Rivers Public Library is challenging all Tucker County parents and caregivers to read 1,000 books to their children before entering kindergarten.  The ongoing program is designed to help parents and children get in the habit of reading on a regular basis and to improve all-too-important language skills.

Children will be signed up at the library, and given a packet that includes facts about reading, program instructions and a 100 book tracking log that contains, date read, title of the book and circles to mark each book read.  Once the log is completed and signed by the parent, it will be returned to the library for a prize, certificate of accomplishment and photo promotion.  Any child from Birth till the start of kindergarten is eligible.

“Our staff is so excited to offer this program to Tucker County,” said Library Director Nancy Moore.  “You never know how far you’ll go, until you open a book and take a look. Reading is the first step in your child’s education.”

Books may be read multiple times, as repetition is important for learning at a young age.  All books read to a child count toward the total, including group story times, however those read before signing up at the library do not count.

The program has been instituted in partnership with the Allegheny Highlands Parents as Teachers organization, which covers Randolph, Barbour and Tucker Counties.  Elkins-Randolph and Philippi Public Libraries are also participating.

More information is available about this and other Five Rivers Public Library events by calling 304-478-3880, following on www.Facebook.com/Five-Rivers-Public-Library, or by accessing the library’s website at www.fiverivers.lib.wv.us/contact-us.
