Canaan Valley NWR & Partners complete 3 year project on A-Frame Road

The US Fish and Wildlife Service (FWS) personnel at Canaan Valley National Wildlife Refuge have partnered with Dominion Power and Western Pocahontas Properties LP to make improvements to A-Frame Road in northeastern Tucker County.

This important road is located off HWY 93/Corridor H north of Davis, WV.  It provides access to the northern areas of Canaan Valley National Wildlife Refuge for hikers, bikers, birders, hunters, and many others to enjoy the Refuge and all it provides.  This road is also a main access for Mt. Top Hunt club and Old Stoney Hunt club.

The project began 2015, starting at the FWS boundary where 4.3 miles of roadway were improved by removing several hundred rocks from the roadway, reshaping the uphill shoulder and ditches for better drainage, and adding drainage points on the downhill side.   Approximately 3,000 tons of gravel was placed on the entire 4.3 miles of road stretching from the FWS boundary to Hwy 93/Corridor H.  This was compacted and graded to allow for a smoother ride. Existing culverts were cleared of debris and 75 tons of 3-6 inch rip rap was used at culvert points to facilitate drainage.

FWS is hoping that this road will lessen equipment damage, improve community relations, increase visitation, and bring more light to what can be done with good partners.  Thank you to all the people who were involved in the project throughout the years.  We would like to specifically thank Dominion Power for their financial contribution and willingness to participate. We would also like to thank Western Pocahontas Properties for their help locating all culverts and providing access. Last but not least, we would like to thank Old Stoney Hunt club for providing a crew of volunteers as well as lunch for both volunteers and staff.

Please help all of us keep this vital access road in great shape by driving responsible on the road at reasonable speeds, and take your time to enjoy your visit to Canaan Valley National Wildlife Refuge.
