Potential WVDOE policy change discussed at BOE meeting

At the Board of Education meeting on Monday, December 4, Board President Tim Turner addressed possible changes to a West Virginia Department of Education policy.  Policy 25.10, also known as “Assuring the Quality of Education: Regulations for Education Programs,” could receive multiple changes to the existing policies.


If the changes are approved, the minimum graduation requirement would be reduced from 24 credits to 21, “which will allow students to focus carefully on selected course work that will lead to successful completion of their academic and personal goals.”   Another proposed change would make the statewide grading scale 90-100, 80-89, 70-79, and 60-69.

Another possible update in Policy 25.10 would include only three social studies requirements instead of four for graduation.  According to the Department of Education, “the proposed revisions will ensure students are college and career ready.”

The department is currently accepting comments regarding the policy changes.  To comment or read all of the changes in entirety, visithttps://wvde.state.wv.us/policies/.  The comment period ends on Monday, December 11 at 4 p.m.

Four separate presentations began the meeting.  Davis Thomas Elementary Middle School Principal Alicia Lambert and PTO representatives provided an update on the finished gym remodeling, which included new bleachers and floor.  “It was a huge community effort,” Lambert said.

Tucker Valley Elementary Middle School students presented their multiple intelligences project.  The project began after the students studied the poem “Life Doesn’t Frighten Me,” by Maya Angelou.  The students presented their diverse visual interpretations of the poem, exhibiting the different ways in which individuals think.  The presentation reminded all in attendance that although individuals may be different, all deserve the same amount of respect.

The high school senior class and advisors presented their budget, itinerary, and decision to travel to Pigeon Forge, Tennessee for the class trip in May.  The board unanimously voted in favor of the trip.

Students from the Odyssey of the Mind class at the high school presented their energy reduction goals and outlined their future plans to apply for a state award.

The next board meeting will be on Monday, December 18 at 4:30 p.m. at the board office.
