MT. LION BOYS’ BASKETBALL OPEN SEASON AGAINST ELKINS

HAMBLETON – The Tucker County High School Boys’ Basketball team opened the season with a home game against longtime rival Elkins on Wednesday December 6th. The Mt. Lions got off to a slow start and could not complete the comeback and fell in the contest 56-49.


The first quarter belonged to the visiting team as the Tigers came out on fire as they outscored Tucker County in the opening quarter to lead 18-6 after one quarter. The Mt. Lions would fight back in the second quarter as Tucker County’s Wesley Snyder scored 9 points in the quarter as the home team outpaced Elkins 17-16 to make the score 34-23 Tigers at the half.

Tucker County then picked up the paced on defense as they held Elkins to 7 points in the period and outshot the Tigers 14-7 to cut the visitors lead to 41-37 after three quarters of play. In the final quarter Tucker County got to within 1 point of Elkins, but the Tigers held off the Mt. Lions to pick up the win 56-49. This was the first win by Elkins at Tucker County since December 22, 1998.

Wesley Snyder led Tucker County with 20 points, 3 steals and Corrick Ambrose added 17 points, 8 rebounds. Jeffrey led the Mt. Lions on the boards with 13 rebounds and Alec Cummings collected 6 boards in the Tucker County loss. Elkins was led by Donovan Wiles with 25 points. The Tucker County JV fell in the first contest of the night 41-36.

OAKLAND,MD – Tucker County traveled to Southern last Friday December 8th for a contest with the Rams. The Mt. Lions built a 9 point lead in the third quarter, but Southern stormed back to take the victory 54-46.

The first quarter went back and forth as neither team could build a lead and Southern led after one quarter 12-9. In the second quarter the Mt. Lions surged ahead as they outscored the home team 13-7 to take the lead at halftime 22-19.

Tucker County then continued to build on their lead early in the third as the Mt. Lions advantage grew to 9 points. The Rams then fought back late in the third quarter as they connected on 3 three point field goals to outpaced Tucker County in the third 16-8 to take back the lead at the end of three 35-30. Southern then sank another 4 three point baskets in the fourth quarter and the Rams outscored Tucker County 18-16 to pick up the win over the Mt. Lions 54-46.

Jeffrey Snyder led Tucker County with 11 points, 7 rebounds, 3 blocks and Wesley Snyder added 10 points. Corrick Ambrose chipped in with 9 points for the Mt. Lions in the loss. Southern was led by Korey Mitchum with 21 points. The Mt. Lions JV team lost the first contest 67-27.

Tucker County(0-2) was scheduled to play at Glenville State College on December 11th. The Mt. Lions will then face either Gilmer County or Doddridge County. If Tucker County wins on December 11th then they will play in the Championship game on Saturday December 16th at 1:40pm at Glenville State College. If Tucker County falls on December 11th then they will play in the Consolation game on Friday December 15th at 5pm at Glenville State College.
