Various county officials presented updates and requests at the January 10 Tucker County Commission meeting
Transportation Supervisor Harry Poling asked the Commission for financial backing to purchase new bus radios that will increase coverage in the county. Poling estimated that approximately 1,000 students use the bus system.
“The need is here because of the safety of the bus drivers, for the students, my only problem is the Board of Education should provide more of this funding,” Commissioner Moore said. The new radios are estimated to cost around $15,500. The Board of Education provided $4,000.
The Commission approved the payment of the remaining cost of the project, with the condition that the Board of Education will reimburse the Commission for a portion of the cost.
Rhonda Adkins represented both elementary middle schools as part of the Youth in Government program. The program wants to take eight middle school students and two high school students to Charleston to participate in government activities. The Commission approved $1,860 to send the students to participate.
Sherry Simmons reported that the County Clerk’s office scanned and filed 17 years of death certificates. “That’s significant,” President Hinkle remarked.
The Commission approved the hiring of three part time employees for the Office of 911.
Board appointments were approved for the Tucker County Animal Shelter and Ambulance Authority Board. The Ambulance Authority Board is seeking to fill one to two vacancies on the board.
Commissioner Patrick Darlington provided an update on Corridor H. Later this month the state will release the bids for the next three and a half mile section. The money from the successful road bond referendum will pay for this segment of Corridor H. “Hopefully here, in the next four to five years, we will have the whole section from Elkins to Rt. 72 complete,” Commissioner Darlington said.
Meetings for 2018 will be held the second Wednesday of every month at 9 a.m. and the fourth Wednesday at 4 p.m. The next meeting is scheduled for Wednesday, January 24 at 4 p.m.
