At the February 19 Board of Education meeting, the speech therapy services proposal presented by Best Life Therapy and Integrated Speech Solutions was accepted by the board. The county’s special education director was advised to pursue a contract for services.
These services will lay off two employees currently employed by the county. The board emphasized that although adoption of the tele-service will subsequently lay off two employees, it will save the board money, as well as increase the quality of services.
In accordance with a resolution constructed by the West Virginia School Board Association, the Tucker County board created a resolution addressing the state’s ongoing teacher and service personnel pay debate.
Board President Tim Turner read Tucker County’s resolution at the meeting. The board voted in favor of supporting the resolution.
A brief discussion regarding the storage and implementation of drugs counteracting the effects of a narcotic overdose at schools was held. A policy was recently passed to allow county schools to store such drugs. The board intends to decide whether to house such drugs in county schools in the future.
As the Regional Educational Services Agency continues to dissolve, the agency is allowing the counties served to peruse its remaining inventory. Tucker County is in the running for one of the agency’s vehicles.
The meeting began with the county social studies project winner presenting her research to the board. The student studied the hippie movement of the 1960s, and the lasting effects the movement had on our society.
The student compared the counterculture beliefs to those echoed in aspects of today’s society. “I believe both times are of people escaping societies morals,” she said. She will go on to compete in the regional competition.
