(Davis, WV) Potomac Highlands Food and Farm iannounces that their local foods grocery, the Highland Food & Farm Market (Highland Market) is now open Friday through Sunday, 10 a.m.-6 p.m. With the help of a USDA Rural Business Enterprise Grant and assistance from the Claude Worthington Benedum Foundation, Kimmy Clements, the Project Coordinator, has been able to purchase appliances and other necessary items to enable the addition of the Highland Market to our community. The USDA funds have also allowed the Highland Market to add an Assistant Manager to the project, Eva Gutierrez.
The Taste of Tucker Farmer’s Markets had a great amount of growth this season, both in number of participating vendors as well as customers. USDA pork and beef as well as EBT were welcomed new additions. Number of vendors increased from 12 to 28, which included many Tucker County High School students. The demand for local food was apparent therefore the supply increased. New agriculture entrepreneurs joined the field and existing farmers increased their supply, with many pursuing new ventures. Though the farmers markets have come to an end this does not mean we have to say farewell to local food. The Highland Market has many of those farmer’s market members providing nutrient-rich food to area residents and visitors at this new venue in Davis.
Contributors currently include LaFontaine Bakery, Stemple Brothers Farm, D & B Farm, Teets Orchard & Nursery, White Grass Café, Healthberry Farm, Whispering Pines Family Farm, Backbone Food Farm, The Charm Farm, Round Right Farm, Green Glades Creamery, Possom Tail Farm, DeBerry Farm, Mountain Roasters, Mountain Springs Farm, and Coco Loco Farm, with more additions flowing in. 65% of these providers are within 35 miles of the grocery, while over 80% are within 50 miles. In addition, the Highland Market is eager to hear about other producers who may want to add items to the shelves.
Inventory includes beef, pork, chicken, eggs, dairy cheese, bread, granola, dried beans, coffee, honey, hot pepper jelly, pumpkin butter, granola bars, soups and a variety of produce. Fruits and vegetables will fluctuate depending on availability, but currently we have winter squash, salad mix, head lettuce, kale, collards, rainbow chard, potatoes, garlic, apples, celery, beets, carrots, turnips, peppers, and green tomatoes. With the changing of season, locally crafted arts will be added as well as more ready-to-eat take-home items. The goal is to help all of us nourish ourselves regardless of time, budget or skillset. Most credit cards are now accepted and EBT will be added soon. We are currently accepting suggestions for business hours. Switching to Thursday through Saturday as well as 11am-7pm is under consideration. If you have a preference, please let us know.
