In her residence and on her own terms, apropos to how she lived her life, Helen Hedrick Schlarb passed away Tuesday April 10, 2018. Helen, age 80, was surrounded by the ones who she loved most; her husband, children and grandchildren.
Born August 16, 1937 on the banks of the Black Fork of the Cheat River, in Hendricks, WV, Helen was the youngest of five children of Merrill Gilmer Hedrick and Pearl Jane Waggy. She spent her childhood with her siblings exploring the forests and roaming the hills of Tucker County. Arriving in Parkersburg in 1941, Helen graduated from Parkersburg High School in 1955. Except for several years in Texas fulfilling a service commitment, she was a lifelong Vienna resident. Helen was employed by Dupont and retired from Erie Insurance Company.
Helen is survived by her husband of 57 years, David Lloyd Schlarb; her children David L. Schlarb II (Kymmy) of New Philadelphia, Oh and Christopher A. Schlarb (Melanie) of Charleston; her grandchildren, Rachel Budy (Chad) of Dublin, Oh, Shannon Marsh (Brian) of Cuyahoga Falls, Oh, David L. Schlarb III of Morgantown, Haley Tallarico (Dominic) of Charleston, Michael Schlarb of North Canton, Oh and Alexander Schlarb (Alicia Phebus) of Huntington; her great-granddaughters Amelia Haller, Evelina Budy and Raena Schlarb; brother W. Alan ‘Oo p’ Hedrick (Linda) of St. Mary’s, WV; and numerous nieces, nephews and extended family.
Helen was preceded in death by her parents, her sisters Faye Elliot and Sue Asbury, and brother Gil Hedrick. The family would like to acknowledge and express a special thanks to Helen’s niece, Betsy Righter, for her constant support and ever-present companionship to Helen after the loss of her most-beloved friend and sister Sue.
A memorial service to honor the life of Helen Schlarb was Saturday , April 14, 2018 at 1 p.m. at Sunset Memorial Funeral Home, Parkersburg.
