As voting for the state and national elections ramps up, county officials participated in National Youth in Government Day at Tucker Valley Elementary Middle School last week. A summary of the event was provided during last week’s County Commission meeting.
County officials spoke to the school’s third and fifth graders. “We were trying to show them the different roles of county government,” Commissioner Patrick Darlington said. To do so, a variety of county officials were present.
The three County Commissioners, County Clerk Sherry Simmons, Circuit Clerk Sharon Moats, Prosecuting Attorney Ray LaMora, Magistrate Riley Barb, and Deputy Sheriff Chris Teeter all attended the event.
“Some of them had some nice questions,” Darlington said.
Early voting has begun and is open until Saturday, May 5. It’s been a very busy two weeks, but today was over the top,” County Clerk Sherry Simmons said. Simmons reported that the office administered ballots to 60 voters on Wednesday. The office is open for Saturday voting on April 28 and May 5.
The Office of Emergency Management is applying for a grant that would provide the county with an air inflatable Zumro shelter. The shelter would be shared between the counties in Region Four. These shelters are ideal for field hospitals, catastrophic events, triage, or first aid stations. “They have multiple capabilities,” Director Kevin White said.
The Commission administered a $15,000 grant to the Comprehensive Opioid Site-Based Program. The program is run by Tucker County Community Corrections. The goal of Community Corrections is to establish an alternative program that provides structured and rehabilitative services to citizens of Tucker County to help them become motivated and successful citizens.
May 3 was declared as a National Day of Prayer. There will be three meetings to honor this day. The meetings are at the courthouse at 11:30, in Thomas at noon, and in Davis at noon.
The Commission approved the hire of a part-time employee for the animal shelter.
The Commission gave an extension to the Saddles and Smiles Event to serve alcohol on the day of the event, Saturday, May 19.
The next Tucker County Commission meeting is scheduled for Tuesday, May 15 at 9 a.m.
