ELKINS – Davis Medical Center is offering men over the age of 50 an opportunity to ‘tune up their health.’ A Men’s Health Night has been planned for Thursday, June 14, from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Phil Gainer Community Center in Elkins. The event is free to the public and offers valuable health screenings and information about key issues specific to men’s health.
“An ounce of prevention is truly worth a pound of cure,” said Catherine M. Chua, DO, FAAFP, FAARM, Davis Health System Physician and Chief Medical Officer. “Knowing if you are at risk for a disease and learning about lifestyle and medical interventions that may decrease that risk will go a long way toward improving quality of life and longevity.”
Health screenings, which begin at 5 p.m. include:
-PSA (Prostate Specific Antigen, which indicates prostate cancer prostatitis or an enlarged prostate)
-Blood Pressure
-Blood Glucose
-Cardiac Risk Screening
-Cholesterol
-Incentive Spirometry (A pulmonary function test)
-Hearing Screening
-Skin Cancer Screenings
-More education on Colonoscopy, Sleep Apnea and Tobacco Cessation
Test results will be provided immediately except for the PSA. The PSA requires a blood draw for the screening, so attendees will receive that result in the mail 7 to 10 days after the event. Fasting is not required for the blood draw.
Dinner will be served at 6 p.m. At that time, health experts will present talks and answer questions.
The panel includes:
-Dr. Garrett Butler, Family Medicine, Davis Medical Center, “Health and Fitness as You Age.”
-Jim Severino, LD, CDE, Registered Dietician and Certified Diabetic Educator, Davis Medical Center, “Better Nutrition and Diet.”
-Vince Mullenex, Rph, “Medicines and You: A Guide for Men.”
-Dr. Jeffrey Jackson, Dermatologist, Mountain State Dermatology, “Skin Cancer Risk Factors and Prevention.”
This better health event is free and open to the public however space is limited. RSVP is required by June 9, 2018 by calling Chad Ware at 304-637-3378 or by emailing him atWarec@davishealthsystem.org.
Door prizes will be drawn the end of the event and include a Yeti cooler, Calloway X Series Golf Driver, Hex Diablo Golf Balls and a zero- gravity camp chair. Participants must be present to win.
Chua said men over the age of 50 are encouraged to attend the event.
“Primary prevention is very important for health and longevity,” she said. “Men’s Health Night will consist of important screenings for early detection of illnesses as well as education geared toward a healthful lifestyle.”
