On Wednesday, July 18, 2018, staff and students from the Rubenstein Center School in Davis, WV, traveled the twisting, winding, curves of Route 72, in Tucker County.
Their goal was to deliver a trash bin to the Flanagan Hill Community Center (FHCC), in Red Creek, WV. The FHCC hosts many events throughout the year, including family reunions, birthday parties, fundraisers and the annual Flanagan Hill Fall Festival.
Over a weekend, these events can generate a sizeable amount of trash and the FHCC was in need of an outside trash bin to store trash until it could be picked up by the weekly trash service. In May members of the FHCC Board had contacted “Blackwater Construction” a Simulated Workplace Company at The Rubenstein Center School to see if the students could help them solve this problem.
Hunter R., a student enrolled in the Carpentry Program, accepted the challenge and under the direction of Travis Hamrick, instructor, he designed and built the trash bin. Upon its completion, Mr. Hamrick and three carpentry students, Hunter R., Zachary E., and Preston S., delivered and set-up the trash bin. FHCC Board Members, Millie Eye and Norma Knotts, greeted the students and thanked them for their hard work. “We really appreciate this,” Millie Eye said, “It’s going to help out a lot.”
