Thomas, WV – Family, friends and well-wishers gathered on the patio at Cortland Acres to celebrate the successful completion of another Nursing Assistant class on July 12.
In addition to a certificate of completion, the students received a “Lady of the Lamp” pin to honor the founder of modern nursing, Florence Nightingale, and to commemorate their accomplishment. They will take the West Virginia State Certification Exam in a few weeks to become Certified Nursing Assistants.
“Even after twenty-one years as a nurse, I am moved when I participate in a pinning ceremony, explains Cortland’s Director of Nursing, Robin Eye. “From this day forward, theirmain role will be to provide care to residents and help with daily activities that may be difficult to perform on their own. Some of these students will likely choose to get more training and advance their career as a LPN or BSN or beyond. While the work is sometimes hard, the rewards far out-weigh the challenges.”
Working Monday through Friday at Cortland Acres, seven students took advantage of Cortland Acres’ vast campus for classroom lecture and instruction as well as hands-on training with residents. The two-part program gives students the necessary skills to pass State certification and be successful in a long-term care facility.
“This has been an excellent group of students,” explains course instructor Kathy Supak. “Since CNAs spend more time with residents than any other medical team member, theyare the front line of care and often the first to notice changes in appearance, mood or physical ability. I am confident that the latest seven graduates will excel in caring for residents.”
