The rain just does not want to stop in our area. The Almanac called for a wet summer this year and it has not been wrong. Gran swore by the planting guide and the weather predictions. She always planted and harvested by the moon signs. Momma Said, “Don’t mess with perfection, if something works stick with it.” I just don’t understand how they can publish these predictions so far ahead and be so right.
I guess there are people who do that sort of thing for a living. Yea, they are climatologists. I guess it is the same way the people in the know predict rise and falls in the economy. (Way over my head) but I guess they are good at what they do. Maybe Elvis has not left the building after all.
I made sauerkraut twice and did it by the moon signs the first time and it came out perfect. The second time was a few years later and I forgot to check the sign before I shredded it. I left it for the allotted time and when I finally checked on it, it was ruined. If you try to do it in the wrong sign it will rise out of the brine and rot. It needs to stay weighed down and under the salt brine. Momma Said, “Listen to the people who have been doing it for years and you will not fail.”
I felt really bad because it was a waste of time and product. I hate to waste anything I am the one with the slivers of soap in the shower, turning off the water when I brush my teeth and banging the ketchup bottle on the table to get the last drops. I picture a day when we don’t have resources and that is when we will be wishing for that last drop of fresh water. Momma Said, “I hope that day never comes and I don’t want to be the one contributing to it.”
