PARSONS – The Mt. Lions hosted East Hardy last Friday October 5th. Tucker County outscored the Cougars 14-6 in the second half to pick up the win at home and rebound from last week’s loss.
East Hardy got the ball to start the game as Tucker County won the toss and deferred their option to the second half. The Cougars went right to work on offense as they put together a 4 play 65 yard drive that was capped off on a 61 yard touchdown pass. The extra point kick was no good to make the score 6-0 East Hardy with 10:35 left in the first quarter. The Mt. Lions first offensive possession end with a punt as the East Hardy defense held. The visiting Cougars also had to punt on their next drive and a short punt gave Tucker County the ball in great field positon at their own 48 yard line. The Mt. Lions then took advantage of the field position as they moved the ball down the field and scored on a 16 yard touchdown pass from Liam Hood to Jeffrey Snyder with 9 seconds left in the first quarter. The drive covered 51 yards in 11 plays and the PAT kick was goof by Ben Callaway to put Tucker County ahead 7-6. The second quarter was dominated by defense as both teams struggled to sustain a drive. East Hardy then put together a good drive at the end of the second, but a Ben Cromer interception with 42 seconds left in the second stopped the drive at the Tucker County 6 yard line. The defensive stand by the Mt. Lions allowed the score to remain 7-6 Tucker County at the halftime intermission.
The Mt. Lions received the kick to start the third, but Tucker County would fail to move the ball giving the ball back to East Hardy. The Cougars then moved the ball down the field on their next possession. The drive was stopped when Tucker County’s Ben Callaway intercepted a pass at the Tucker County 10 yard line with 9:01 left in the third quarter. The Mt. Lions then used the momentum to march the ball down the field on offense. Tucker County drove 90 yards on 7 plays to score on a 1 yard touchdown run by Liam Hood with 5:28 left in the third. The PAT kick was good by Callaway to increase the Mt. Lions lead to 14-6. The offense for the Cougars could not respond and the score remained 14-6 Tucker County after three quarters. A Tucker County punt gave East Hardy the ball back in the fourth with good field position. The Cougars then put together a scoring drive that was finished off on a 4 yard touchdown pass with 7:50 left in the fourth quarter. The 2 point conversion failed to tie the contest and the Mt. Lions maintained a 14-12 lead. Tucker County failed to move the ball on their next drive and they were forced to punt the ball back to East Hardy. The Mt. Lions defense then stepped up again as they held the Cougars and forced an East Hardy punt late in the fourth quarter. Tucker County then got their offense moving and Ben Callaway scored on a 41 yard touchdown run with 3:13 left in the contest. The Mt. Lions lead increased to 21 -12 after the PAT kick by Callaway. East Hardy then drove the field, but the Tucker County defense came through again. Another Ben Cromer interception with 2:17 left in the game at the Tucker County 8 yard line would sealed the game and give the Mt. Lions the victory 21-12.
Liam Hood led Tucker County with 10 of 21 passing for 108 yards and Ben Callaway added 9 carries for 84 yards rushing. Cole Rapp chipped in with 13 carries for 69 yards rushing and Jeffrey Snyder had 2 receptions for 53 yards receiving. East Hardy was led by Aden Funkhouser with 336 yards passing. East Hardy outgained Tucker County in total offense 351-261.
