VERA LAVENA PIFER AUVIL, age 102, a resident of Parsons, WV, departed this life Monday evening, October 29, 2018 at Valentine Personal Care Home, with her family by her side and under the care of Mountain Hospice.
She was born Wednesday, April 12, 1916 at Stemple Ridge, Preston County, a daughter of the late Warden Vale and Myrtle Agnes Lantz Pifer. On June 28, 1936, she was married to Bruce Clark Auvil, who preceded her in death.
Surviving are one son, Clark Vale Auvil and wife Donna of Elkins; one son-in-law, Tom Bodkins of York, PA; nine grandchildren, Neil Auvil, Tim Auvil and wife Penny, Gerald “Jay” Auvil, Tonya Irwin and husband Mike, Benjamin Auvil and wife Ann, Bruce Auvil and wife Becky, David Allen Auvil and wife Tiffany, Tommy Bodkins and wife Chastity and Rebekah Harlacher and companion Rick; eleven great grandchildren, Casey Auvil, Ashley and husband Loren McKenzie, Shannon and husband Matt Smith, Kaitlyn and Jessica Auvil, Logan and Eli Gripper, Kayla and Benjamin Auvil, Kimber Auvil and Easton Harlacher; six step great grandchildren, Natasha, and Amber Scarff, Savannah Preston and Charles Preston, and Beth Roberts and Mindy Mauzy; great great grandchildren, Dylan Auvil, Colin McKenzie, Audrey, Christiana and Vivian Smith; Shawn and Colton Rush and Raelyn Hayes, Isiaih McLemore, Nora and Audrey Roberts and Austin Mauzy; her special neighbors, Butch and Patty Roy, Lorene Shahan, and Mountain Hospice.
She was the last surviving member of her immediate family having been preceded in death by one son, Edward Lynn Auvil; one daughter, Donna Sue Bodkins; one brother, Darwin Pifer; two sisters, Leah Minear and Virginia Beckman; and one great granddaughter, Alexis Hayes.
She was a graduate of Aurora High School with the Class of 1934. She was an employee of the former Parsons Department Store and she was a homemaker. She was a member of the St. Johns United Methodist Church of Parsons. Mrs. Auvil enjoyed cooking, canning, gardening, sewing and crochet and she loved to read.
The family received friends at the Lohr & Barb Funeral Home of Parsons on Friday from 5 to 8 p.m. Final rites were conducted at the funeral home on Saturday, November 3, 2018 at 11 a.m. Pastor Lynn Durbin officiated and interment followed at the Limestone Cemetery on Limestone Mountain.
