Berlin L. “Bud” Sponaugle, 87, a resident of Parsons, passed from this life Tuesday, November 6, 2018 at Cortland Acres Nursing Home.


Bud was born Wednesday, September 30, 1931, a son of the late Alvin J. and Dessie Hedrick Sponaugle. He was twice married, first to Martha Hedrick Sponaugle, who preceded him in death in 1999 and then in 2003, he married Louetta Mason Sponaugle who survives. They had celebrated fifteen years of marriage.

Left to cherish Bud’s memory is a son, Sid Sponaugle and wife, Sandy of Shepherdstown, one granddaughter, Tabitha Sponaugle, one stepson, Joe Mason and wife Brenda, one stepdaughter, Joyce Mason Lambruno and husband Steve, three step-grandchildren, Marcus and Mitchell Mason and Steve Lambruno, two step great-grandchildren, Hayden and Rece Lambruno, one brother, Paul Sponaugle and wife Lela, one sister, Abbie Wamsley and husband Charles, and several nieces and nephews.

Preceding Bud in death besides his parents and first wife were twin infant daughters, one brother, John, and four sisters, Evelyn, Lorraine, Ruth ad Louise, and one step-grandson, Loupie Lambruno.

Bud graduated Parsons High School with the class of 1950 where he played both basketball and football. On his 65th class reunion, he was inducted into the 2015 Hall of Fame. Corporal Sponaugle had served in the U.S. Army from 1952-1954 in Alaska. After his military service, he worked for the U.S. Forest Service. Bud enjoyed turkey hunting and trout fishing on the Dry Fork. He was a loyal WVU and Tucker County sports fan, especially when his son and grandsons played.

Bud served on the council for the Town of Hendricks. He also worked with the original founders of the Hendricks Hick Fair, which came to be a well-known festival in Hendricks. Bud was a member of numerous fraternal organizations which included Pythagoras Lodge# 128 A.F. & A.M. Parsons, York Rite, Elkins, Scottish Rite, Charleston, Osiris Temple, Wheeling, Beni Kedem Shrine, Charleston, Royal Order of Jesters, Charleston, Tygart Valley Shrine Club and Red Fez Patrol. He was also a member of the Harman Post# 5781, Veterans of Foreign Wars, H.W. Daniels Post#29, American Legion and Elks Lodge #1135, Elkins, Disable American Veterans, and Disabled American Veterans of America. He made numerous trips to Erie, PA taking children to the Shriner’s Hospital for treatment.

Bud was a true and devoted husband, an adoring father, and a loving grandfather. He attended the St. John’s United Methodist Church.

Visitation was held at the Hostetler Funeral Home on Thursday, November 8, 2018, from 11 a.m. until 1 p.m., the funeral hour. Rev. Philip Dent officiated, and interment followed at Parsons City Cemetery where members of the H.W. Daniels Post #29, American Legion, Tygarts Valley Post# 3647, Veterans of Foreign Wars, Tucker County Veterans Association, and the WV Honor Guard conducted full military honors and the Pythagoras Lodge #128 A.F. & A.M. Parsons, conducted ritualistic services. Expressions of sympathy may be made to the Martha Sponaugle Fund with the Tucker Community Foundation. The Hostetler Funeral Home was entrusted with the arrangements for Berlin L. “Bud” Sponaugle. Condolences may be made to the family at www.hostetlerfuneralhome.com
