Roger Dale Phillips, 74, a resident of the Leadmine Community, passed from this life Sunday, February 24, 2019, after an extended illness.
Roger was born Monday, May 15, 1944, in Parsons, a son of the late Robert Phillips and Izetta Knotts Phillips. On July 1, 1966 at Oakland, MD, he was married to the former Marilyn Kelley, who survives. They had celebrated 52 years of marriage.
Also left to cherish Roger’s memory is a son, Mark Phillips, and a daughter, Kellie Crosten and husband, Greg, all of Parsons, four grandchildren, Ethan and Emily Crosten, Marky and Maricay Phillips, three brothers, Clifford Phillips of Parsons, Harold Phillips of Florida, and Randy Phillips and wife, Rose, of Hambleton, and his mother-in-law, Lavera Kelley, and several nieces and nephews of whom he was very fond.
Besides his parents, Roger was preceded in death by his father-in-law, Theodore (Jake) Kelley.
He graduated from Parsons High School with the Class of 1962. After graduation, he enlisted in the U.S. Army and served from 1962-1965. Roger was a member of the United Mine Workers with twenty-seven years of service. He had been an avid hunter and fisherman. After retiring, he enjoyed working on the family farm and helping neighbors and friends. Roger loved and enjoyed his family very much. His four grandchildren were the light of his life, and he cherished the times he and Marilyn spent attending their activities, especially their sporting events.
Roger was a member of the Leadmine United Methodist Church where he had served as Sunday school superintendent and church trustee.
A visitation was held at Hostetler Funeral Home in Parsons on Tuesday, February 26, 2019 from 6 until 8 p.m. Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, February 27, 2019 at 11 a.m. Rev. Brad Barton will officiate, and interment will follow at Shaffer Cemetery near Leadmine where members of the Tucker County Veterans Association, H.W. Daniels Post #29, American Legion, Tygarts Valley Post #3647, Veterans of Foreign Wars, and WV Honor Guard will conduct full military honors.
