On December 3 through 6 the Tucker County Senior Citizens took a trip to Louisville, Kentucky. They spent “Christmas at the Galt House.”
The Galt House Hotel provided an entertaining “Colors of the Season” dinner show. They also had a beautiful display of ancient Chinese animated figures and gingerbread houses of all shapes and sizes. Every evening the bellhops, dressed as toy soldiers, did a dance routine to change the calendar to count down the days until Christmas.
While in Louisville the group also toured Churchill Downs, home of the Kentucky Derby. They learned about the different horses that have won the Derby and toured the paddock area as well as got to go trackside.
The “Spirit of Jefferson” provided a charter river cruise on the Ohio River while the group enjoyed a delicious catered lunch. They were entertained with festive Christmas music.
Louisville is the home of the “Louisville Slugger.” The Seniors were given a tour of the factory. They learned how the bats were originally made by hand which took approximately 30 minutes per bat. With modern machines and technology the bats are made in approximately 30 seconds. They were amazed by the giant baseball bat outside the factory. It stands 120 feet high, is 9 feet in diameter and weighs 68,000 pounds. It is an exact replica of the bat used by Babe Ruth in the early 1920’s.
Next the group visited the Frazier History Museum. In addition to the historical displays the museum offered many Christmas trees decorated as they would be in various countries from around the world.
That evening concluded with a visit to the Derby Dinner Playhouse across the river in Indiana. After a delicious buffet dinner the group was entertained by the “Winter Wonderettes,” a cast of 4 women, who did a play about a company Christmas party. The cast involved some audience members including several from the Tucker County group. Everyone enjoyed the entertainment.
The concluding attraction on the trip was the “Lights under Louisville.” This is a driving tour through an underground cavern. There were approximately 2 million lights set up in various displays.
The group returned home after a very enjoyable trip to celebrate the Christmas season.
