Mary Whetzel (nee: Hebb), 81 years of age, and a resident of Amherst, passed away Saturday, December 28, 2013, at Golden Acres Nursing Home following a lengthy illness.
Mary was born November 30, 1932 in St. George, West Virginia and lived there until 1950 when she moved to Lorain where she spent most of her life.
Mary worked as an office clerk for several car dealerships including Bob Beck, George Sweeney, Ed Mullinax, and spent 20 years at Mike Bass Ford retiring in 1990. She was a faithful member of Faith Baptist Church, Amherst since 1961. She found her greatest joy in life spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren, going on family trips, sporting events and spending time with them doing the domestic activities of life.
She leaves to cherish her memory her son Raymond and Kathy Whetzel, Jr.; her daughter Virginia Whetzel; grandchildren, Joe Whetzel, Jessica Vanca (Dave), Julie Crawford (Dennis), Amanda Vanca; six great grandchildren, Gabrielle Vanca, Gage Crain, Andi Crawford, Gwennyth Crain, Kayleigh Crawford, Graydyn Crain; and her brother Russell Prentice Hebb of Thomas, W.VA.
Mary was preceded in death by her husband of forty-five years Raymond Joseph Whetzel, Sr. in 1997; her brother Donald Hebb; an infant sister; and her parents Russell and Ora Hebb (nee: Nazelrod).
Friends called Monday Dec. 30, 2013, from 5 to 8 p.m. at the Hempel Funeral Home; 373 Cleveland Ave., Amherst. Funeral services were held on Dec. 31, 2013 at 11 a.m. at the funeral home. The Rev. Cory Prosowski, associate pastor of Faith Baptist Church, Amherst officiated. Burial followed at Evergreen Cemetery, South Amherst, Ohio.
The family suggests that memorial contributions be made to Faith Baptist Church 440 North Lake Street, Amherst, Ohio 44001.
