Canaan Valley National Wildlife Refuge Releases for Public Review Recreational Fishing Plan

Fishing is a traditional use of the National Wildlife Refuge System. At Canaan Valley National Wildlife Refuge (NWR), we welcome people of all backgrounds and abilities to participate in recreational fishing. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service is engaged in a concerted, national effort to enhance access and opportunities for hunter and anglers. (Secretarial Orders 3356 and 3347)
Canaan NWR is seeking public review and comment on its proposed fishing opening. The public is invited to review the draft documents for our proposed fishing program, including the Draft Fishing Plan, Compatibility Determination and Environmental Assessment. These documents will be available for a 45-day comment period.
Canaan NWR is proposing to:
Provide opportunities for freshwater fishing on refuge lands.
Open fishing areas and seasons
Draft documents are available online at the refuge’s official website, under features on top of the page, at https://www.fws.gov/refuge/Canaan_Valley/. You can contact the refuge at 304-866-3858 ext. 1609 or at the emails listed above to request more information.
There will NOT be an open house/public meeting at this time. Throughout the planning process, we encourage constituents and the public to provide input. Release of our hunting and fishing plan and associated environmental assessment provide a meaningful opportunity for public participation and involvement to shape the hunting and fishing program at a national wildlife refuge.
Across the country, National Wildlife Refuges work closely with state agencies, tribes, and private partners to expand recreational fishing access. Fishing provides opportunities for communities, families, and individuals to enjoy the outdoors, support conservation efforts, and participate in a popular American tradition.
