TUCKER COUNTY HEALTH DEPARTMENT COVID -19 Update

COVID-19 cases are continuing to rise in West Virginia.  In just a few days our total number of active COVID-19 cases in West Virginia has doubled.  Today, it was announced that West Virginia’s “Rt value” is the highest in the nation. Which means the virus is spreading faster in our state than anywhere else in the country.  (“Rt value” is the average number of people who become infected by an infectious person.)

Each of us must do all that we can to reduce the spread of this virus.  The choices and decisions we make each day can make a difference and reduce illness and save lives.  It is up to each of us to protect our loved ones and our neighbors. Below are some practical things we can do to protect our community.

If you are traveling out of state, consider the following safety measures upon returning.

  • Self-monitor your health 14 days following out of state travel. If you think you may have been exposed to COVID-19, contact your healthcare provider.
  • Stay home as much as possible and avoid contact with others.
  • Avoid going into public places for 14 days following out-of-state travel.
  • If you do need to go out into public, wear a cloth face covering when going into public places like stores, restaurants, and work/school.

Wear face coverings.  On Tuesday, an executive order from the Governor went into effect requiring face coverings in all indoor public places.  The order states that anyone over the age of 9 must wear face coverings in all public places where social distancing cannot be maintained.

Wearing a face covering and the following these recommendations, are our best defense against COVID-19:

-Do not shake hands or hug others

-Avoid crowds, especially in poorly ventilated spaces

-Maintain a 6-foot distance between you and other people

-Avoid touching your face.

-Avoid exposure to others who are sick.

-Washing your hands often with soap and water for at least 20    seconds.  Use an alcohol- based hand sanitizer if soap and water are not available.
