Edward Cletus “Eddie” Surguy, Sr., age 68 years, a resident of the Pheasant Run Community, Kerens, WV departed this life Monday evening, August 9, 2021, at his home surrounded by his loving family and under the care of WV Caring. He had been in declining health for the past seven weeks.
He was born Monday, February 2, 1953, at Baltimore, MD, a son of the late Edward Richard Surguy and Wanda Lee Mullenax Vance and stepfather William H. Vance, Sr. He was raised by his grandparents, Milton and Letha Mullenax, alongside his aunts and uncles at Whitmer, WV. On March 4, 1974, at Oakland, Md, he was married to the former Shirley Ann Carr Surguy, who survives.
Also surviving are three sons, Eddie Cletus Surguy, Jr. and wife Jackie of Corpus Christi, TX, William Emery Surguy and wife Randi of Washington, NC and Joshua Eric Surguy and wife Crystal of Washington, NC; two daughters, Rebecca Anne “Becky” Surguy of Parsons, WV and Lindsey Danielle Shifflett and husband Jacob of Elkins, WV; granddaughter, Katelyn Jade “Katie” Surguy of Parsons, WV; one sister, Debra Lynn Wymer and husband Mike of OH; two brothers, William H. Vance, Jr. and wife Cecilia of OH and Roger Dale Vance and wife Roberta of PA; twenty grandchildren and three great grandchildren; several aunts and uncles; and a very special friend, John Croston.
Preceding him in death is one great grandchild, Rowan Edward McDonald.
He attended the schools of Randolph County and Harman High School and was a graduate of the West Virginia State Police Academy in 1989. He started his career in Tucker County as Deputy, Sheriff Deputy, Investigator for the Prosecutor and was also the Dog Warden, Chief of Police and the Chief Deputy, retiring in 2018, with almost thirty years of service. He was also Commander of Civil Air Patrol in Tucker County. He loved his Law Enforcement Family and serving his community was an honor to him. Eddie was instrumental in starting the Child Advocacy Center in Parsons. He was a carpenter, masonry worker, equipment operator and was a member of the Local 137 Operating Engineer, and he was an Iron worker rigger. He attended the Pentecostal Church of God in Hendricks. He was an avid outdoorsman. Eddie loved to spend time with his family and friends and always enjoyed company. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, and friend.
The family received friends at the Lohr & Barb Funeral Home of Parsons on Friday from 4 to 7 p.m.. Final rites were conducted at the funeral home on Saturday, August 14, 2021, at 11 a.m.. Pastor Daniel Woods and Pastor Adam Snyder officiated and interment followed at the Laurel Hill Cemetery at Whitmer.
