This is a photo of CPL Paul Junior White, 35th Tank Battalion. He was born December 7, 1924, and passed away November 10, 1983, from lung cancer. He was raised by his mother Lona Tingler; his father, Robert P. White died in 1933 at the age of 26 of diabetes. CPL White entered the Army in 1943 and was honorably discharged in 1946. He served as a Tank Gunner in Normandy, France, and Rhineland, Germany. Once, he and another guy were blown out of a tank (he earned a Purple Heart), The Germans came and found him badly wounded; his arm was nearly blown off. He played dead. The Germans took the other guy and CPL White later heard some shots. He assumed they had shot the guy. Years later while working at a garage, that guy walked in asking for CPL White. By-Standers said CPL White turned white as a sheet from the shock of seeing the other guy. In addition to the Purple Heart, he received 3 Bronze Service Stars, Good Conduct Medal, Distinguished Unit Badge, WWII Victory Medal, Favorably Considered for Good Conduct Clasp, American Campaign Medal, and others. In 1947 he married Ethel Vandevander; she is still living at the age of 94. They had five children and now have eight grandchildren.
