FRANKLIN – The Tucker County Softball team traveled to Pendleton County for a double header on Wednesday April 20th. The Lady Mt. Lions took the first game 16-6 and Tucker County also won the second game 12-1.
The first game of the night was a back and forth affair until the Lady Mt. Lions broke the 6-6 tie in the 5th inning. Then Tucker County added 7 runs in the 6th inning to pull away for the 16-6 Tucker County victory. The Lady Mt. Lions collected 16 hits in the contest. Addie Hicks, Katie Hicks, Kristen Hicks, Paige Shaffer, Cheyenne Gooden and Katlynn Simmons had multiple hits in the Tucker County Game 1 victory. Paige Shaffer got the win on the mound and Ava Shaffer entered the game for 3 innings of relief for the Lady Mt. Lions.
In Game 2 the Lady Mt. Lions kept the bats hot as they scored early and often as they won the contest by the score of 12-1. Tucker County racked up 17 hits in the game as Kristen Hicks, Rachel Felton, Ava Shaffer, Paige Shaffer and Autumn Russell had multiple hits for the Lady Mt. Lions in the victory. Kristen Hicks led Tucker County with 4 hits in 4 at bats and Brianna Gooden collected a Homerun in the game. Ava Shaffer pitched a complete game win for the Lady Mt. Lions striking out 10 Pendleton County batters.
MOOREFIELD – The Lady Mt. Lions traveled to Moorefield on Friday April 22nd to compete in the Bub Riggleman Tournament. In the first game on Friday Tucker County faced off against Frankfort. The Lady Mt. Lions fell behind early and could not recover as the Lady Falcons got the win over Tucker County 9-2. Frankfort started the scoring in the 1st inning with a double and then a groundout produced another run in the 1st inning. The Lady Falcons then added 3 runs in the 2nd inning with a homerun, a double and a groundout to up the score once again. The Lady Mt. Lions struggled to get the bats going as they only managed 5 hits in the contest. Cheyenne Gooden led Tucker County at the plate with a homerun in the 2nd inning. Autumn Russell collected 2 hits in the game and Addie Hicks connected with a triple, while Kristen Hicks had 1 hit also for the Lady Mt. Lions in the loss. Ava Shaffer took the loss on the mound for Tucker County as she went 6 innings and gave up 10 hits.
In the second game of the day for Tucker County they faced off against Greenbrier West in the Bub Riggleman Tournament. The Lady Mt. Lions would pull away in the 4th inning and then take the victory by the score of 4-1. In the 4th inning Cheyenne Gooden hit a single on a 2-1 count to drive in a run. Then Ava Shaffer would double on a 1-0 count to bring in 2 runs. Kristen Hicks then hit a double to score 1 run in the big 4th inning for Tucker County. Paige Shaffer went the distance on the mound for the Lady Mt. Lions as she pitched a complete game allowing just 4 hits and striking out 7 Greenbrier West batters. Tucker County had the offense going as they collected 9 hits in the game. Autumn Russell and Paige Shaffer had 2 hits each, while Rachel Felton, Ava Shaffer, Kristen Hicks, Cheyenne Gooden and Addie Hicks collected 1 hit each for the Lady Mt. Lions. Paige Shaffer led Tucker County with a triple and a single at the plate, while Kristen Hicks collected a double for the Lady Mt. Lions in the win.
MOOREFIELD – The Tucker County Softball team traveled back to Moorefield on Saturday April 23rd for a game against Independence at the Bub Riggleman Tournament. In the game the Lady Mt. Lions opened up the scoring in the 1st inning with 1 run off an Autumn Russell double. Independence would answer and as the game went to the bottom of the 5th inning with the score all tied at 4-4. The Lady Patriots then scored in the 5th inning to take the lead and then they added 3 runs in the 6th inning to pulled away. Tucker County could not recover as Independence took the 8-4 victory over the Lady Mt. Lions.
Tucker County out hit Independence as the Lady Mt. Lions racked up 8 hits compared to 6 for the Lady Patriots.
Katelyn Simmons and Autumn Russell connected with multiple hits for the Lady Mt. Lions, with Simmons leading the way overall for Tucker County going 3 for 3 at the plate. Rachel Felton, Paige Shaffer and Cheyenne Gooden also collected hits for the Lady Mt. Lions in the loss. Paige Shaffer took the loss as she pitched a complete game, striking out 5 batters while giving up 8 hits.
Tucker County(7-12) will travel to Grafton tonight Wednesday April 27th for a double header with the first game starting at 5:30pm. For more information visit TuckerCountySports.Com.
