Celebrate Recovery has set a goal to collect 7,500 pairs of shoes as a fundraiser that will benefit not only the local CR program but others across the world, who are in need of jobs and shoes.
Celebrate Recovery is a Christian organization designed to help individuals overcome hurts, habits and hang-ups through Jesus Christ. One does not have to be a Christian to participate in the program. The organization began a chapter in Tucker County, but in an effort to better serve participants, the Tucker County chapter consolidated with Randolph County. Angie Davis serves as the Ministry Leader for Tucker County. Ministry Leaders for Randolph County are Marty and Edie Basil and Dale Shockey.
According to Davis, the group is raising funds to advertise the program so it can reach more people in the area. The shoe drive was discovered on the website funds2orgs.com. “When you’re in recovery you are supposed to give back. This fundraiser has a double benefit for the organization. It allows us to send shoes to individuals in underdeveloped countries and provides jobs. Individuals are taught to repair shoes and allowed to sell them as a means of income. In turn, CR receives 40 cents per pound of shoes collected. It is a win, win situation.”
To avoid shipping costs, CR must collect a minimum of 200 bags of 25 pairs−5,000 pairs of shoes. The group has collected more than 100 bags thus far, but needs the help of the community to fulfill its commitment. The drive will last until August 6. Storage unit number eight at Penn Avenue Car Wash, in Parsons, has been designated as a drop off site for shoes. The unit is unlocked. To donate, individuals need only lift the door and place shoes inside. Because shoe repair is part of the program, shoes need not be new. Donations of gently used shoes are welcomed.
CR meets at 6 p.m., every Thursday, at Summit Church in Elkins. For more information about the shoe drive or the CR program, contact Angie Davis at 304-677-9613.
