Turner’s Tidbits

This is a bird’s eye view of Hambleton from March 1910. The place of Hambleton has had many names: Rush’s, Goff’s, Goff Town, Black Fork, Hulings and Hambleton. I heard once that when the town began, the mail was put in a wooden box, under a bed, in a back room. The mail came up from Rowlesburg two time a week and was carried by horseback. The lumber and leather businesses brought money into the town with huge payrolls. The first school was a one room school and eventually was replaced by a six-room school.
