Momma Said for August 29, 2014

I still have flashbacks of mom with her hair up in curlers and her bandana wrapped around her head. It didn’t matter to her what she needed to do, if the hair was in curlers she did it, if it was mowing the grass or going to town for something. Momma Said, “What you see is what you get.” She never tried to impress anyone with anything she did. I take after her a lot in that aspect.

As Popeye used to say, “I am what I am.” And that is the truth of the matter. I don’t think I could change now if I wanted to, which I don’t think I want to. Mom was a woman who was comfortable with herself and I loved that about her. And she had a way of making other people feel comfortable around her. She could strike up a conversation with anyone.

And Heaven forbid, if there was something she wanted to find out about, nothing stood in her way. She could ferret out information about anything she set her mind to. Momma Said, “Information is the key to open all doors.” And if she was alive now, she could open every door in the county.

She is not here and the pain is still as great as the day she passed. For those that say the pain lessens as time passes is full of it. Maybe some people cope with loss better than I do, all I know is I wish she was still with us. I have memories that continue to keep her with me and some are great, some not so much. I regret all the times that little tiffs kept us apart, but I treasure every minute I had with her.

At this time of harvesting the garden, she would use about everything in the garden in a dish she called slungullion. I looked that up on Google and all that came up was a dish called slumgullion. It calls for hamburger, tomatoes and pasta. But that is not what mom made. I will leave you with the recipe and you can call it whatever you want. All I know is when we were growing up, we called it GOOD.

SLUNGULLION

  • 1 small head of cabbage
  • 1 hot peppers (More if you like it HOT)
  • 1 green pepper
  • 1 squash
  • 1 zucchini
  • 1 onion
  • 2 green tomatoes
  • salt and pepper to taste

Directions

Chop all ingredients into a skillet with Crisco and fry until tender.
