HAMBLETON – The Mt. Lions Boys’ Basketball team opened their season with a home game against Pendleton County on Wednesday December 6th. Tucker County got off to a slow start, but the Mt. Lions pulled away in the second half to collect the 68-30 victory.
The first quarter was back and forth, but Tucker County pulled away slightly after one quarter to lead 16-12. In the second quarter the Mt. Lions continued to get their offense going as they outscored the visiting Wildcats 15-8 in the second to make the halftime score 31-20.
Tucker County would then explode in the third quarter with 23 points and the Mt. Lions defense held Pendleton County to 7 points to make the score 54-27 after three quarters. The Mt. Lions defense would then hold the Wildcats to 3 points in the fourth and Tucker County would score 14 points in the final period. This made the final score 68-30 Tucker County.
Trevan Bonner led the Mt. Lions with 16 points and Ethan Rosenau connected on 4 three point baskets to add 12 points for Tucker County. Maddox Anderson had 10 points while Owen Knotts and Garrett Wilfong added 8 points each for the Mt. Lions in the win. Knotts and Ashton Lycliter led Tucker County in rebounds with 10 boards each. Anderson also dished out 7 assists on the night. The Mt. Lions JV team got the win in the first game 68-20.
GRAFTON – Tucker County traveled to Grafton on Friday December 8th for a varsity only contest. The Mt. Lions got down early in the contest and Tucker County could not complete the comeback as they fell on the road by the score of 51-44.
The first quarter went to the homestanding Bearcats as Grafton led after one quarter 14-5. In the second quarter Tucker County continued to struggle on offense as Grafton edged the Mt. Lions 10-9 to make the halftime score 24-14.
The defense was active once again in the third quarter as both teams scored 13 points each to leave the Grafton advantage at 37-27 after three quarters of play. The Mt. Lions then began to claw back into the game in the fourth quarter after an incredible follow up dunk by Garrett Wilfong with 7:25 left in the game. Tucker County went on a 13-3 run to make the score 44-40 with 3:09 left in the contest. The Mt. Lions would get no closer as Grafton hangs on for the 51-44 victory.
Ethan Rosenau led Tucker County in scoring with 17 points as he had 5 three point baskets in the game. Ashton Lycliter and Garrett Wilfong added 8 points each in the loss for the Mt. Lions. Lycliter also pulled down a team high 16 rebounds for Tucker County.
Tucker County(1-1) will travel to Frostburg, MD on Friday December 15th to play against Mountain Ridge. For more info go to TuckerCountySports.Com.
