HORSESHOE – St. George, WV – Working under the theme “Lead On”, dozens of the state’s top teen leaders descended upon Camp Horseshoe this summer to engage in team building and address important issues facing youth during the annual YLA Leadership Summit.
In addition to participating in traditional outdoor camp activities where teamwork and communication are at the forefront, the students engage in dialogue and debate on domestic and international policy that impacts them. They plan year-long activities for their local youth organizations which have an impact in their schools and communities.
The teens take the Summit seriously. In the words of one, “We have next-to no leadership programs in our schools. Leadership is as much a skill as it is a talent. Young leaders need to collaborate to practice and sharpen our skills.” Another added, “A good leader knows when to lead and when to follow. I’ve learned the difference at Camp Horseshoe.”
Leadership Summit sponsors include local Lions, Rotary, Kiwanis, and Ruritan clubs, churches, community foundations/organizations, the Ohio-West Virginia YLA, corporations, individual and private donors.
