The inaugural Appalachian Fly Fishing Festival (AFFF) is set to celebrate fly fishing and the region’s beauty, bringing together enthusiasts and novices alike in a weekend full of free activities, education, and community spirit.
The vibrant mountain town of Thomas, West Virginia, is gearing up to be the center of attraction for anglers and outdoor lovers as it welcomes the Appalachian Fly Fishing Festival from May 31 to June 2, 2024. Orchestrated by natives Tyler Waldo and Robby McClung. Their shared admiration for fly fishing and West Virginia’s natural beauty sparked the creation of the AFFF. A festival that looks to celebrate the region’s angling opportunities and abundant natural resources.
The Festival kicks off Friday, May 31, with a meet and greet at Randolph’s in Thomas, followed by two days of free public access to casting clinics, fly tying demonstrations, vendor exhibits, great food, and crafts. A special ticketed fundraiser on Saturday evening will feature a collaborative dinner and raffle opportunities. Closing the Festival with a casting clinic geared toward the beginners, followed by a kid’s Fly Fishing Rodeo on Sunday, June 2 on Thomas Lake above the spillway.
“I’m excited for the opportunity to not only offer the chance to learn how to fly fish but also to educate an appreciation for the resources where we live,” says Tyler Waldo. Robby McClung echoes this enthusiasm, saying, “I’m excited for a reason to fish, to share one of my passions with others, and hopefully to inspire new anglers.”
