DAVIS – Ski season is just around the corner and Canaan Valley Resort State Park is planning for an EPIC season. On Saturday, the park is sponsoring a job fair, looking for folks to be a part of that EPIC season.
The job fair is slated for 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday at the Skier’s Lounge. Canaan is searching for bartenders, bus persons, housekeepers, dishwashers, lift attendants, line and grill cooks and snowmakers.
Cary Sponaugle, director of sales and marketing at Canaan Valley Resort State Park, said the snow blowers are in place, and everyone is ready for a great season – actually an EPIC season – on the mountain.
“We are ready for an EPIC season – energized positive innovative Canaan,” Sponaugle said. “Canaan employees are empowered to help create a more positive guest experience. “
Sponaugle said the tube park will offer eight lanes of fun this winter –two more than last year.
“The magic carpet moves the riders to the top of the hill so they can tube down,” Sponaugle said. “The snow blowers are in place. We can make 500 tons per day.”
Canaan Valley Resort State Park offers ice skating, tubing, alpine, Nordic and snowboarding. They offer 43 trails and have the ability to make snow on 75 percent of their trails. There are five lifts and trails are 30 percent for beginners, 40 percent for intermediate and 30 percent for advanced and expert.
Warren Wik has joined Canaan Valley Resort State Park as the Ski School Director. He brings 10 plus years of training, instructing and tearing up the slopes and hopes to pave the way for more thoughtful and guest-centric ski school programming.
“I have been living in the area for 11 years,” Wik said. “I am a level III Telemark Ski Instructor and I hope to bring people back to Canaan to ski more often. I want to invite families here to ski – this is a great family destination.”
Wik said over the last few years, Canaan has been in a rebuilding process.
“With the new management, we are hoping to up our children’s programs,” Wik said. “The children are the future of skiing. We teach many more children than adults. We hope to get more high school and college students in as instructors to build our staff. We want the younger folk to get excited about skiing and hope they become PSIA instructors.”
Sponaugle said some of the changes for the 2014-2015 ski season include a new terrain park, which has been relocated to Lower Prosperity. The expanded features include rails, boxes, a wall and plenty of sculpted jumps. Music will be broadcast to keep up the excitement in the terrain park.
A return to NASTAR racing allows racers to test their speed against Olympic Gold Medalist and NASTAR pacesetter, Ted Ligety. Races will be every Saturday and Sunday with special events planned throughout the season.
